Tottenham battles Chelsea to sign Mike Maignan

Tottenham could be ready to battle Chelsea out for the signature goalkeeper Mike Maignan of Lille this summer, with one broadcast alleging Hugo Lloris could be offered to his fellow Frenchman the chance to showcase himself well.

The northern French side Lille appear to be doing something right, as seemingly every player in their squad has become a transfer target for someone, somewhere in Europe. In attack, it’s no different.

Mike Maignan’s name has been in the headlines recently as one of the many pair of hands in goal poles to be linked with Chelsea as Kepa Arrizabalaga’s replacement, hence, Kepa who Frank Lampard has lost patience with. In February it happened that Lampard had made him his ‘priority’ signing.

As reported by Manu Lonjon earlier in April though, José Mourinho had supposedly began discussions with the 24-year-old in the event that France captain Lloris departs Spurs.

Further down the line there have been some other developments, as Le10Sport now claim that Maignan is Tottenham’s own priority signing when the summer transfer window reopens. However, in order for the club to sign him, Lloris will need to depart. A bold claim indeed.

It’s said that Mourinho does not want the pair competing for the number one spot, therefore he will not oppose the sale of his World Cup-winning captain. Yet, if Maignan is their ‘priority’, surely that means Lloris will be leaving, no?

Anyway, added in the report is the stance of Lille on the matter. The club received a flurry of offers last summer for their in-demand player, but the commitment and professionalism of Maignan has impressed them enough to now allow the goalkeeper to take the next step in his career.

The club already signed their replacement in Brazilian Léo Jardim last July, so an eventual sale looks increasingly likely. Price wise, some offers exceeding €20m were lodged from clubs last summer, meaning any accepted bid in the future is likely to be an increase on that figure considering Maignan’s stock has risen since then.
